This book is a full color catalog for the 2024 exhibition entitled Embroidered Lives: South County Samplers and Their Stories, hosted by the Gilbert Stuart Birthplace and Museum in Rhode Island, April 28 — October 13, 2024.
Included are large images and detailed descriptions of more than thirty outstanding embroidered samplers made by girls living in southern Rhode Island or girls who married into well-known "South County" families. In line with the exhibition’s organization, the samplers are grouped along four themes: (1) Introduction to Samplers, (2) Schools and Teachers, (3) All in the Family (pairs of samplers made by members of the same family), and (4) Quaker Connections. Extensive historical and genealogical research on the young sampler makers and their families enables a fascinating discussion that helps place the samplers in social, historical, educational, and/or religious context. And threaded through the text are wonderful insights into the lives of the girls and young women who left these very personal artifacts that demonstrate their needle knowledge and document their artistic excellence.
All proceeds support the work of the Sampler Consortium.
